How To Read An IGI Certificate
An IGI certificate provides an independent assessment of a diamond's quality and characteristics. Understanding each section of the report helps you evaluate a diamond with confidence and transparency.
At Venoré, our certified diamonds are accompanied by detailed IGI documentation, allowing you to understand exactly what makes your diamond unique.

Report Number
Every IGI certificate includes a unique report number assigned specifically to the diamond.
This number acts as the diamond's identification reference and can often be found laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle, allowing the certificate and diamond to be matched for verification purposes.
Diamond Description
This section confirms the type of diamond being graded.
For Venoré diamonds, the certificate identifies the stone as a laboratory-grown diamond and may also specify the growth method used, such as CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition).
Shape & Measurements
This section records the diamond's shape and exact dimensions.
Examples include Round Brilliant, Oval, Pear, Cushion, Emerald, Radiant, Princess, and Marquise.
Measurements influence a diamond's visual size, proportions, and overall appearance.
Carat Weight
Carat weight measures the weight of a diamond.
While carat is often associated with size, a diamond's visual presence is also influenced by its cut quality and proportions.
A well-cut diamond can appear larger and more brilliant than a poorly cut diamond of greater weight.
Color Grade
Color measures the absence of color within a white diamond.
Diamond Color Scale
Grade |
Description |
|---|---|
| D–F | Colorless |
| G–J | Near Colorless |
| K–M | Faint Color |
| N–R | Very Light Color |
| S–Z | Light Color |
Diamonds closer to D are considered more rare due to their exceptional colorlessness.
Clarity Grade
Clarity evaluates internal and external characteristics formed during a diamond's growth process.
Diamond Clarity Scale
Grade |
Description |
|---|---|
| FL – IF | Flawless / Internally Flawless |
| VVS1 – VVS2 | Very Very Slightly Included |
| VS1 – VS2 | Very Slightly Included |
| SI1 – SI2 | Slightly Included |
| I1 – I3 | Included |
Most inclusions are microscopic and cannot be seen without magnification.
Cut Grade
Cut is often considered the most important factor affecting a diamond's beauty.
A diamond with an excellent cut reflects light more effectively, creating greater brilliance, fire, and sparkle.
Diamond Cut Grades
Grade |
Description |
|---|---|
| Excellent | Optimal brilliance and fire |
| Very Good | High brilliance with slight differences |
| Good | Noticeable variations in brilliance |
| Fair | Limited sparkle |
| Poor | Reduced brilliance |
Polish, Symmetry & Fluorescence
Polish
Evaluates the quality of the diamond's surface finish.
Symmetry
Measures the precision and alignment of the diamond's facets
Fluorescence
Indicates how a diamond reacts under ultraviolet light.
These characteristics contribute to overall craftsmanship and visual performance.
Proportions Diagram
The proportions diagram illustrates the diamond's angles, percentages, and measurements.
For round brilliant diamonds, these measurements influence brilliance, fire, and light return.
Recommended Round Brilliant Proportions
Parameter |
Recommended Range |
|---|---|
| Table % | 54% – 57% |
| Depth % | 61% – 62.5% |
| Crown Angle | 34° – 35° |
| Pavilion Angle | 40.6° – 41° |
| Girdle | Thin – Medium |
| Culet | None – Very Small |
Clarity Characteristics Plot
The clarity plot maps the location of internal and external characteristics identified during grading.
Each plot is unique to the individual diamond and serves as a fingerprint for the stone.
Laser Inscription
Many certified diamonds include a microscopic laser inscription on the girdle containing the report number.
This allows the diamond to be matched directly to its certificate for authentication and verification.
Full Report vs. Certificate Card
IGI offers both a detailed grading report and a simplified certificate card. While both verify a diamond's authenticity and quality, the amount of information provided differs significantly.
